Karagöl Tumulus 2 and its peribolos (Kadıoğlu, 2021, 359, Figür 185)

Visiting Teos in 1875, G. Hirschfeld mentioned the existence of six large tumuli on the east side (Sazlıgöl Area) of a stream (Yassıçay) bordering the ancient city to the east; he added that it was possible to see more tumuli on the road to Myonessus, two hours walking away. Documentation of the tumuli around the city started in 2013 within the scope of research on the city necropoleis. In the eastern part of the city, a total of 17 tumuli (12 in Sazlıgöl Area, two in Tepecik Area, one in Çamlık Area, and two in Karagöl Area), were added to the city plan. All the tumuli, named and numbered according to their location, have been registered as cultural assets by the 1st Regional Board for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Izmir. Unfortunately, there have been illicit digging pits opened in almost all of the tumuli, and the Karagöl 01 Tumulus has been largely destroyed by looters.
