Tiberius Claudius Philistes, who lived in the second half of the 1st century AD is one of the best known persons of Teos. Many inscriptions deal with his benefactions. We know almost nothing about his natural father Hermothestos. He was adopted by Tiberius Claudius Mnasimachos while his brother Zenodotos was given to adoption to Tiberius Claudius Kalobrotos. Philistes acted as priest of Dionysos and fullfilled many other offical functions in the city. He spent most of his wealth for public benefactions. In advance Teos honored Philistes with the titles of “Son of the People” and “New Athamas of the Teians” for financing many public buildings. Athamas was the mythological founder of Teos.
