Within the scope of the “Heritage for the Future Project” of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the anastylosis (resurrection) of the Western Stoa of the Sanctuary of Dionysus, carried out under the supervision of the İzmir Directorate of Surveying and Monuments, has been successfully completed.
As a first step, digital models of the architectural blocks were created with a 3D scanning device provided with the support of the Turkish Historical Society (TTK). In this way, the architectural relationships of the blocks were analyzed in a three-dimensional environment and their original placement was determined. The ancient block numbers were also an important reference point in this process.
In the process, building elements such as columns with unfluted lower parts and fluted upper parts in Ionic style, Doric capitals with Ionic kymation with ekhinus profile known as Samos type, architrave blocks with three fasciae, plain (without relief) friezes and tooth-row cornices were used.
The architectural blocks unearthed during excavations since the 1960s were meticulously sorted in the field and in the excavation warehouse. Compatible pieces were identified, their restoration was completed and the building was brought back to its standing in accordance with its original texture.
The completed anastylosis process made a significant contribution to the cultural heritage of the region by making the historical value of the Sanctuary of Dionysus visible.
